Crabs, bats and communists, in Cuba's greatest Soviet souvenir.
Seems like everyone’s talking about the Olympics right now, so here’s my contribution: a set of photos from the abandoned bobsleigh track just outside Sarajevo.
Built for the 1984 Winter Games, these tracks on Mount Trebević hosted the luge and bobsleigh events that year. The facilities were severely damaged during the Bosnian War however, and during the 1992-95 Siege of Sarajevo they formed a front line between the city’s defenders and the surrounding Serb nationalist forces.
There are plans to renovate the tracks, in time for the 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival. But for now at least, the place lies largely abandoned – pockmarked with bullet holes, while numerous unexploded mines still lurk amongst long grass in the vicinity.
Coming soon, in my next blog post I’ll dig deeper into the story of what happened here during the war.
